Short days in Tokyo in January 2025

Back in Tokyo

At the end of January, I found myself in Tokyo for a brief but unforgettable stopover on my way to and from Hakuba, where I was snowboarding. Though I had visited Tokyo before in 2019, this time felt completely different — I was alone, visiting in winter, and avoiding the typical tourist crowds.

After a late-evening flight into Haneda, I decided to delay sightseeing until the next day. Instead, I headed straight to my hotel, the amazing BnA Wall, where I was delighted by intriguing art-filled rooms. I can't recommend this place enough, especially the delicious breakfast.

Just like in 2019, I spent my first day wandering through Tokyo’s streets until I reached the Imperial Palace area in the heart of the city. This time, I was struck by how much emptier it was compared to August — I can’t even begin to imagine how crowded it gets during Japan's peak travel season around cherry blossom time. For me, August’s heat and humidity were stifling, but the cooler January weather made exploring an absolute joy.

During my four brief days in Tokyo, I explored a vibrant array of sights: the bustling Palace area, the energetic streets of Shibuya and Shinjuku, the historic charm of Asakusa, and the iconic Tokyo Tower. Each location offered a unique glimpse into the city's dynamic culture.
